ABC's of Human Survival

Athabasca University Press | Global Peace Studies

The ABCs of Human Survival examines the effect of militant nationalism and the lawlessness of powerful states on the well-being of individuals and local communities?and the essential role of global citizenship within that dynamic. Based on the analysis of world events, Dr. Arthur Clark presents militant nationalism as a pathological pattern of thinking that threatens our security, while emphasizing effective democracy and international law as indispensable frameworks for human protection.Within the contexts of history, sociology, philosophy, and spirituality, The ABCs of Human Survival calls into question the assumptions of consumer culture and offers, as an alternative, strategies to improve overall well-being through the important choices we make as individuals.

---

Dr. Arthur Clark is a Professor of Neuropathology and Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary, and an active staff neuropathologist at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. He carries lifelong experience with militant nationalist culture, having come of age during the Vietnam War and serving two years as Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. In 1995, in honour of his late wife, he established the Dr. Irma M. Parhad Programmes at the University of Calgary, which focus on ways to improve worldwide health and well-being within the framework of international law. He is also currently involved in a project to establish a Calgary Centre for Global Community, to be based on the values and vision that informed The ABCs of Human Survival.

Alberta's Day Care Controversy

Athabasca University Press

Day care in Alberta has had a remarkably durable history as a controversial issue. Since the late 1950s, disputes over day care programs, policies, and funding have been a recurring feature of political life in the province. Alberta’s Day Care Controversy traces the development of day care policies and programs in Alberta, with particular emphasis on policy decisions and program initiatives that have provoked considerable debate and struggle among citizens. For most of Alberta’s first fifty years as a province, day care was treated as a private rather than a public issue. Beginning in the late 1950s, however, debates about day care began to appear regularly on the public record. Tom Langford brings to light the public controversies that occurred during the last four decades of the twentieth century and the first decade of the new millennium, placing contemporary issues in historical context and anticipating the elements of future policy struggles.

---

“A carefully crafted, meticulously researched gem of a book exploring the history and intrigues of Alberta’s controversies and struggles concerning child care, focused on the period since the 1960s. ... [Tom Langford] makes these controversies lively, detailed, and personal. ... The themes that echo so strongly through political debates in this book are likely to be part of Canada’s future as well as Alberta’s past.”

---

Tom Langford is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary. His research focuses on globalization, labour, and the politics of early learning and child care.

Battle for the Bay

Goose Lane Editions | New Brunswick Military Heritage Series

Battle for the Bay explores a new chapter in the history of the War of 1812. Although naval battles raged on the Great Lakes, combat between privateers and small government vessels boiled in the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine. Three small warships — the Provincial sloop Brunswicker, His Majesty's schooner Bream, and His Majesty's brig of war Boxer — played a vital role in defending the eastern waters of British North America in this crucial war. The crews of these hardy ships fought both the Americans and the elements — winter winds, summer fog, and the fierce tidal currents of the Bay of Fundy — enduring the all-too-real threats of shipwreck and possible capture and imprisonment. In peacetime, these patrol craft enforced maritime law. In wartime, they engaged in a guerre de course, attacking the enemy's commercial shipping while protecting their own. Now, for the first time, Joshua Smith tells the full story of the battle for the bay.

---

"It’s a wonderfully fun short book about a side of the War of 1812 that is otherwise seldom seen."

---

"Battle for the Bay fills an important gap in our knowledge of the War of 1812 in the Maritimes."

---

"Smith’s account is well researched, immensely readable, and another excellent addition to the growing New Brunswick Military Heritage series. Combined with clear maps and well-chosen artwork, this book provides the perfect starting point to a war enthusiast’s driving expedition down the eastern seaboard."

---

Joshua M. Smith grew up in the United States on Cape Cod and coastal Maine. He now teaches at the US Merchant Marine Academy, where is he also director of the American Merchant Marine Museum. He is the author of Borderland Smuggling: Patriots, Loyalists, and Illicit Trade in the Northeast, 1783-1820.

Civil Strife against Local Governance

Verlag Barbara Budrich

Hardly a day goes by without South Africans going on a rampage over the provision of basic municipal services such as water, electricity, sanitation and other municipal obligations. This book connects the critical issue of community protests to the equally precarious issue of political trust in local governance in South Africa by using comparative analysis of grassroots activism in predominantly black communities and predominantly white communities.

Adèle Hugo

Goose Lane Editions

When Victor Hugo died in 1885, the world was shocked to discover that he had a lone survivor: his daughter Adèle, incarcerated in an asylum for insane gentlewomen. Adèle Hugo was an accomplished, intelligent, and ambitious young woman whose potential shrank with every year she spent under her tyrannical father’s roof. At thirty-three, she fell desperately in love with an English soldier who quickly lost interest in everything about her except her money. Her obsession with him proved her undoing. In Adèle Hugo: La Misérable, Leslie Smith Dow recounts Adèle’s nine-year pursuit of her unwilling lover from Guernsey to Halifax to Barbados, her return to her father’s sphere by a former slave, and the progressive schizophrenia that finally incapacitated her. Smith Dow bases Adèle’s stranger-than-fiction history on her bizarre diaries, her family’s letters, and the testimony of eyewitnesses. In this new ebook-only edition, Leslie Smith Dow updates the saga of Adèle Hugo with the fascinating mystery of a painting attributed to the Impressionist master Édouard Manet. This painting came to light in an online auction around 2004. After the purchaser contacted Smith Dow for her opinion, the author and the painting’s new owner set out to determine whether the subject of the painting was Adèle Hugo, and whether it was indeed painted by Manet. Smith Dow’s new afterword recounts their sleuthing in dramatic style.

---

"A very interesting and highly readable book. Leslie Smith Dow provides a thorough and imaginative interpretation of Adèle Hugo."

---

"A fascinating story."

---

"Adèle Hugo: La Misérable is elegantly written and concise. All good news, it must be said, for history and literature buffs alike."

---

"Adèle Hugo: La Misérable is riveting. This book has themes and ideas and is written in plain, crisp sentences. Dow brings a much deeper feminist perspective to her rich and rounded telling of Adèle's story. It is a book well worth reading."

---

"Leslie Smith Dow's Adèle Hugo: La Misérable is the intriguing story of one daughter's bizarre but ultimately hapless rebellion against the restrictions of her lot. La Misérable succeeds very well as the sympathetic portrait of a woman driven to freakish lengths in search of freedom."

---

"Leslie Smith Dow has written in a very readable style the story of the fascinating and almost unbelievable life of Adèle Hugo. I highly recommend this book, especially to readers interested in women's issues and in psychology."

---

"In this immensely readable book, Dow has captured with clarity and assurance the frustrations of being an upper-class woman in 19th-century French society. Fans of mystery, romance, and history will all enjoy a fast-paced and sympathetic portrait of a talented but troubled young woman."

---

"Award-winning Ottawa author Leslie Smith Dow writes in a lucid and factual style that is as interesting and as readable as a well-written novel. The story she has pieced together from numerous sources is an astounding one. One of the most impressive features of Dow"s writing is the way in which she is able to present not only Adèle but also the events and people in her life in all their complexity."

---

"Ce livre est presque le roman d'une vie, mais aussi une histoire qui nous fair voir le grand poète sous une lumière bein differente que celle à laquelle on est habitué."

---

LESLIE SMITH DOW is an Ottawa-based author of print and eBooks, including the award-winning historical biographies Adèle Hugo: La Misérable and Anna Leonowens: A Life Beyond the King and I. A veteran journalist and freelance writer, she enjoys travel and reading improbable-but-true stories.
