Voice and Versification in Translating Poems

Great poets like Shelley and Goethe have made the claim that translating poems is impossible. And yet, poems are translated; not only that, but the metrical systems of English, French, Italian, German, Russian and Czech have been shaped by the translation of poems. Our poetic traditions are inspired by translations of Homer, Dante, Goethe and Baudelaire. How can we explain this paradox? 

James W. Underhill responds by offering an informed account of meter, rhythm, rhyme, and versification. But more than that, the author stresses that what is important in the poem—and what must be preserved in the translated poem—is the voice that emerges in the versification. 

Underhill’s book draws on the author’s translation experience from French, Czech and German. His comparative analysis of the versifications of French and English have enabled him to revise the key terms involved in translating the poetic voice and transposing the poem’s versification. The theories of versification from the Prague School of Linguistics, the French and Swiss schools of versification, and recent scholarship in metrics and rhythm in the UK and in the USA have been integrated into this synthetic but rigorously coherent approach to translating poems. The extensive glossary at the end of the book will prove useful for both students and teachers alike. And the detailed case studies on translating poems by Baudelaire and Emily Dickinson allow the author to categorize and appraise the various poetic and aesthetic strategies and theories that are brought to bear in translating Baudelaire into English, and Dickinson into French.

James W. Underhill was born in Glasgow in 1967. He is Full Professor and lectures on Literature, Poetics, and Translation at Rouen University in Northern France. He worked as a full-time translator of French and Czech, and published poems in translation from French and German. Underhill’s work focuses on both linguistic constraints at a deeper level, and the essential creative impulse by which individuals stimulate the shared language of the community.

Oisín Curran grew up in rural Maine. He received a BA in Classics and an MFA in Creative Writing from Brown University (where he was the recipient of a national scholarship and a writing fellowship), and a diploma in Translation (French to English) from Concordia University. He is the author of Mopus (2008), and was named a "Writer to Watch" by CBC: Canada Writes. Curran lives in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, with his wife and two children.

Contrairement au théâtre québécois, où le bilinguisme est mis en scène de manière intermittente, celui qui provient de ses marges fait du bilinguisme une pratique courante. Les écrivains franco-canadiens – ceux de l’Ouest canadien, de l’Ontario et de l’Acadie – racontent et montent différentes histoires de diglossie et de bilinguisme et jouent le jeu de la littérature en y démultipliant la traduction dans la forme comme dans le contenu. 

L’ « hétérolinguisme » – c’est-à-dire l’inscription de la variabilité linguistique – de ces pièces de théâtre franco-canadiennes est le plus souvent compréhensible pour les lecteurs et les publics bilingues locaux. Néanmoins, la diffusion de telles pièces et, par ricochet, leur légitimation auprès des métropoles théâtrales canadiennes au fonctionnement surtout unilingue, auront à passer par des traductions en supplément à celles auxquelles leurs jeux bilingues leur permettent déjà de s’adonner. Il est possible que, pour atteindre la légitimation par les institutions dominantes grâce à la traduction, « les cultures de l’exiguïté sacrifient ce qu’elles possèdent de plus radicalement créateur1 », c’est-à-dire l’inscription du traduisible et l’hétérolinguisme ludique. De l’autre, parmi les traductions additionnelles qui découlent de ces processus de diffusion et de légitimation, la réinscription supplémentaire ou ludique du traduisible pourrait être tout aussi radicalement créatrice que son inscription première. 

Une analyse percutante, actuelle, de la circulation, en traduction, de la production théâtrale de l’Ouest canadien francophone, de l’Ontario français et de l’Acadie, qui prend des allures de terrain de jeu pour le français et l’anglais.

brings together a critical history of marginalized Franco-Canadian theatre

since 1975, with a probing exploration and analysis of heterolinguistic play

and ludic theatrical translation. Situated in relation both to translation

theory and to dominant models of bilingualism in Canada, Nolette’s study shows

how bilingual theatre and ludic translation can expose and unsettle the

sedimented silence and mistrust that lingers in the intersections of French-

and English-speaking communities, especially in minority situations.

Previously, artificial neural networks have been used to capture only the informal properties of music. However, cognitive scientist Michael Dawson found that by training artificial neural networks to make basic judgments concerning tonal music, such as identifying the tonic of a scale or the quality of a musical chord, the networks revealed formal musical properties that differ dramatically from those typically presented in music theory. For example, where Western music theory identifies twelve distinct notes or pitch-classes, trained artificial neural networks treat notes as if they belong to only three or four pitch-classes, a wildly different interpretation of the components of tonal music.

Intended to introduce readers to the use of artificial neural networks in the study of music, this volume contains numerous case studies and research findings that address problems related to identifying scales, keys, classifying musical chords, and learning jazz chord progressions. A detailed analysis of the internal structure of trained networks could yield important contributions to the field of music cognition.

L’immersion française est née dans les années 1960 dans une école primaire en banlieue de Montréal afin de répondre aux besoins des enfants anglophones appelés à vivre dans le nouveau contexte francophone du Québec. Si elle s’est rapidement répandue dans les établissements primaires et secondaires à travers le Canada, en revanche elle est aujourd’hui encore pratiquement inexistante au niveau universitaire. Le présent ouvrage fait écho à cette recommandation et le titre Politiques et pédagogies de l’immersion en français au niveau universitaire au Canada explicite le caractère éminemment politique de toute disposition, tout aménagement, concernant les langues, en particulier dans un contexte bilingue ou plurilingue. La préface de Graham Fraser resitue le concept d’immersion dans une perspective historique des débats linguistiques au Canada. L’ouvrage fait état des lieux des politiques linguistiques et des aménagements de l’immersion en français au palier universitaire en recensant les dispositifs des universités canadiennes et plus spécifiquement ceux de l’Université d’Ottawa.

Cet ouvrage incontournable servira de cadre de référence pour les institutions universitaires au Canada et dans le monde.
