Boarder Patrol

Orca Book Publishers | Orca Sports

Ryan is determined to be a professional snowboarder but he's learned from what happened to his whistle-blower father that doing the right thing doesn't always pay off. When his parents leave Kamloops, Ryan decides to stay with relatives so he can be near the Salmon Valley Ski Resort. He spends all his time at the ski hill, volunteering with the Junior Safety Patrol to cover the cost of his lift pass.

When his board is stolen, he discovers that his cousin, Kevin, knows more than he should about recent thefts at the resort. Kevin's in way over his head, and soon Ryan's involved, whether he wants to be or not.

As Ryan prepares for the video shoot that could be his big break, he learns that Kevin's in danger. Ryan has to choose between career and family, and hope that, for him, doing the right thing will pay off.

"Thomas has written a fast-paced story that never feels like it is being rushed. Boarder Patrol's plot unfolds quickly, but Ryan remains an engaging character whose struggle to do the right thing for himself and his cousin feels genuine. Even readers who are not interested in sports will enjoy the unravelling of the mystery surrounding the crime spree at the ski hill...Highly recommended."

---

"This hi/lo novel takes readers on a fast-paced ride filled with action and danger…The story includes vivid descriptions of snowboarding and mountain rescue, and the mystery is involving."

---

"The snowboarding sequences are exciting, and Ryan's conversational voice as narrator is accessible and likable…The exciting climax cleverly draws all the storylines together in a way that showcases Ryan at his best [and] features dramatic racing down the runs. Recommended."

---

"A fast-paced read filled with not only snowboarding action, but also skiing accidents and rescues, competitions, and even duffel bags filled with pot. Erin Thomas's book should appeal to adventure fans, thrill seekers, and mystery readers."

"I’m the kind of person who has trouble starting new books. I’ll buy them, and plan to read them. But somehow there’s never time. My dad told me I should try reading Haze, so I started it on the spot. I got to page twenty-seven before we had even left the Bookshelf. On the way home, my dad tried to talk to me, but I had my nose in the book. I did not put it down once that day. I read it in the bath, I read it while I was walking downstairs, and I read it until I finished it. In other words, it was amazing."

---

"Thomas writes efficiently and well. Her passages describing swimming are particularly vivid. The first-person narrative voice is strong and engaging. Haze is aimed at teenage boys and has all the elements to appeal to its target audience. It's short and exciting and an enjoyable read. Highly Recommended."

---

"With its fast-moving plot and its easy-to-read format, Haze is a good choice for a student who wants to escape for awhile."

---

"Perfect for older middle school and high school students who are struggling readers...Fast paced and will keep students interested and guessing what will happen next."

---

"Readers will root for Bram and Abby."

---

"An engaging mystery...This is certainly a title I will be happy to add to my collection."

---

"With its quick pace and action-packed plot, this book is sure to be popular with its target audience of young male readers and will also appeal to reluctant readers."

Forcing the Ace

Orca Book Publishers | Orca Limelights

Alex wants to enter the Silver Stage magic competition, but he needs a sponsor. Jack, a veteran card wizard, is willing to take on the role, but only if Alex agrees to team up with Zoe, another young magician—and Alex’s rival. Working with Jack and sharing the spotlight with Zoe, Alex comes to see that there are other ways to be a magician besides competing—and that magic is about entertaining people, not fooling them.

---

"An important story of growing up and finding meaning in the profession you aspire to. Many teens will go through similar anxieties and uncertainties to those that Alex goes through during the magic competition...With its simple and easy to comprehend language, Forcing the Ace is suitable for reluctant teen readers...Highly Recommended."

---

"Succeeds by showing the value of cooperation—joining forces—and how a mentor can help a teen boy discover what really matters."

---

"Short sentences and chapters make this perfect for reluctant readers. Within that format, the author is able to create interesting characters and a convincing story. Eventually, Alex comes full circle, learning that performing magic is a way to bring joy to others rather than performing for the sake of winning. This book is a perfect addition to libraries needing hi/lo titles."

---

"Thomas has researched extensively, and magic becomes an effective backdrop for well-written characters and intriguing plotting. This novel is a convincing sleight of hand, with a carefully finessed reveal of meaningful life lessons."

---

"Told from an easy-to-engage, first-person perspective, allowing readers to make their own judgments of the storyteller's opinions and perceptions."
