Erasmus T Muddiman

BWL Publishing Inc.

It is London 1665, a year fraught with strange and unearthly events. Comets fly low in the sky while merchants clamor for war. Eleven year old Erasmus T. Muddiman attends St Paul’s School with his younger brother. He enjoys Latin but hates to create Latin verses, preferring the new sciences as seen at the Royal Society. He plays football with the lads in Paul’s Yard, shimmies up the drainpipe outside his bedchamber window and he saves his brother, Desiderius, from all sorts of scrapes. Soon, Erasmus cannot avoid the rumors of war. Men and boys are pressganged, taken to ships or the dockyards. Plague enters the city. As school fellows disappear, Erasmus and his family meet a terrible fate of survival. Who will live and who will die?

---

Plague days abound. The tale of Erasmus and his adventures during these days. Well written and makes one believe they are there. Ms. Pym truly brings history to life.

As a prostitute, Miri unlawfully plies her trade during the Roman occupation of Palestine. She hates her life, and knowing she will eventually get caught, allows men to gather loudly at her door. Soon after, the authorities drag her to a quarry to be stoned, but moments before her death, Joshua saves her. He introduces her into his world, a place where he teaches a new spiritual philosophy to the multitude. Miri is soon swept into a magnitude of emotions ranging from profound self-loathing to the joys of love—love for a man who has only weeks to live. Bound on this earth by human frailty, she listens to his mysterious, but confusing teachings. As Joshua's mistress, and later, his wife, she finally realizes the beauty of his doctrine. It opens her eyes to the mysteries of the universe, and this new faith accompanies her when she finally leaves Palestine forever.

---

I came across this book a few weeks ago while looking for something different to read. It is a well written non-traditional account of the life and message of Jousha / Jesus. The story is told from Mary Magdalene's point of view. It is her story. She as his Wife gives a moving insiders view to the events and outcome of the life of the most famous man who has ever lived. It is of course "Fiction". However in light of recent events where ancient documents have been uncovered that show Jesus may very well have had a wife. It opens the readers mind that there may have been more to the story than traditional renditions have provided. I recommended it as a good read that will leave you wondering, hoping, loving, and respecting a man and a woman who lived well before our time.

The Barbers

BWL Publishing Inc.

It is London 1663 and science flourishes in a mini-Renaissance. Celia Barber shares her father’s shop; he barbers, and she heals during a time when women are not allowed to practice medicine. As a licensed barber, Celia longs to visit the Royal Society or Surgeon’s Hall to see a dissection, but women are not allowed. She befriends a viscount who sneaks her into the Royal Society, where she sees an experiment and meets Robert Hooke, the great scientist of the day. Celia’s sister works as a domestic in Whitehall Palace, who finds an ancient coin. Will it lead to hidden treasure?

---

The Barbers is a rollicking story set in England’s London of the 1660s. Katherine Pym has the practiced ability of telling history through her cleverly built characters—and of the ribald London before its great fire. You are taken up the Old City’s filthy lanes of corbelled houses to the puzzling mazes of Whitehall Palace, its bawdy revelry and intrigue. How do the two mix? Through the eyes and heart of a lass from within the old City walls, in the exciting brogue of the times, we are quite drawn into the traumas of those difficult times. A wonderful piece of work.
