Gustave Courbet

Hatje Cantz Verlag GmbH | E-Books

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) is considered to have introduced the practice of socially engaged painting, and he is viewed as one of the most important representatives of Realism. The direct and honest depictions of this artistic tendency—which ascribed to representing things as they are—challenged the idealized subject matter of academic painting and scandalized the Parisian society of the nineteenth century. Courbet became a leading figure of the rebellious artistic bohème and cultivated a lively exchange with the predominant poets and artists of his era. However, he was not merely an anti-establishment provocateur; he significantly revolutionized landscape painting. With seven essays this volume offers an introduction to selected aspects of the artist’s life and work. His paintings will also inspire even those who may not be well versed in the world of art. Courbet’s incredibly rich oeuvre and his exciting biography make him an artist worth discovering, again and again. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-3867-5)

Louise Bourgeois

Hatje Cantz Verlag GmbH | E-Books

Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was born on December 25, 1911. This book, which is devoted to the central themes of the late artist’s oeuvre, is being published on the occasion of her one-hundredth birthday. It examines her life, her exploration of the works of other artists, and the transformation of her emotions into works of art. Over the course of nine chapters, characteristic works are presented in the context of art history by comparing and contrasting them with works from the Beyeler Collection. The book brings home the fact that Bourgeois not only offset the important antagonism between the figurative and the abstract in modernism, she also helped to provide a unique interpretive level to modern art beyond that of the purely visible. This publication is an introduction to the life and work of a woman who was one of the most important artists of her time. (English edition ISBN 978-3-7757-3312-0)

Ferdinand Hodler

Hatje Cantz Verlag GmbH | E-Books

Swiss historical painter, Symbolist, Modernist predecessor? Here, murals of significant moments in Swiss history; there, lyrical, rapturous Alpine landscapes and sensitive depictions of people: Ferdinand Hodler’s life and art are multifaceted. The man, who presented himself as a virile, forceful genius, grew up under difficult circumstances and became one of the most famous artists of his time. Orphaned at the age of fourteen, the experience of death determined his entire body of work. Hodler’s motto was said to have been “cherchez la femme!”, yet he was the also the creator of one of the most radical, touching cycles of paintings in art history: the suffering and death of his lover, Valentine Godé-Darel. In seven sketches Ulf Küster creates a portrait of this fascinating personality and provides an introduction to his work.
