Brides of Banff Springs

BWL Publishing Inc. | Canadian Historical Brides

In the Dirty Thirties jobs were hard to come by. Having lost her father and her home in southern Alberta, Tilly McCormack is thrilled when her application for a position as a chambermaid at the prestigious Banff Springs Hotel, one of Canada’s great railway hotels, is accepted. Tilly loves her new life in the Rocky Mountain town and the people she meets there. Local trail guide Ryan Blake, is taken with Tilly’s sparkling blue eyes and mischievous sense of humor, and thinks she is just the girl for him. Ryan’s work with a guiding and outfitting company keeps him busy but he makes time for Tilly at every opportunity and he’s already decided to make her his bride. On the night he plans to propose to Tilly another bride-to-be, whose wedding is being held at the Hotel, disappears. Tilly has an idea where she might have gone and together with Ryan sets out to search for her. Will they find the missing bride and will Tilly accept Ryan’s proposal? FOREWARD In celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday, Books We Love, with the support of the Government of Canada, is publishing a series of novels set in each of the Canadian Provinces and Territories. Each book features a historical event or location as well as a the story of a bride and groom, representative of the men and women who came to Canada in search of a new life and new freedoms. These books combine fact and fiction to show how these brides and grooms, all from diverse backgrounds, joined in marriage to create new lives and build a great country.

---

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the setting of the Banff Springs Hotel and the evil villain, Frederick as well as the knight in shining armour, Ryan. And I especially liked the ghost. (Doesn't every old hotel have one?) I hear this novel is the first of a series of Canadian Bride books. There are ten provinces in Canada and three territories. Does that mean 13 books? I do hope so! And BTW, awesome writing. Smooth as gossimer.

The Buxton Chronicles

BWL Publishing Inc.

1907. A gold mining town in northern California is hardly the place for a member of the English aristocracy. When Lady Serena Buxton arrives in Cold Creek, she is shocked to find her husband, Lord Buxton, is missing. Everyone in town treats her as if she is already a widow. With no husband and no money, what is a lady to do? 1913. Lord and Lady Buxton’s orderly lives are upset by Pinkerton Agent Stuart Montgomery’s unexpected arrival at their estate in England. Montgomery is investigating suspicious deaths at an American aviation company. Will the Buxtons return with him to America and help him close the case? Or is this an excuse for Montgomery to renew a potentially scandalous association with Serena? 1918. Lord Randolph Buxton is fighting at the front during the closing months of World War 1. Lady Serena manages Buxton Hall which has been converted into a military hospital. When Randolph is reported missing in action, Serena is heartbroken but carries on with day-to-day duties while she awaits news of her husband. And then Randolph comes home. She married for love, but she does not know the man who returns to her. Will she be strong enough to hold together everything she most cherishes?

---

As I read this story, I felt Serena's pain while she dealt with the uncertainty surrounding her missing husband, and later with his precarious situation upon his return. I hoped for a happy ending for Serena and Randolph who have become two of my favorite characters. Great job, Ms. Chatham. I'm a little sad that the trilogy is complete, but I'm looking forward to the next offering by this author.

This, along with the novels of Georgette Heyer, engendered in her an abiding interest in the period with its style and manners and is one where she feels most at home. Apart from her writing, Victoria is an avid reader of anything that catches her interest, but especially Regency romance. She also teaches introductory creative writing. Her love of horses gets her away from her computer to volunteer at Spruce Meadows, a world class equestrian centre near Calgary, Alberta, where she currently lives.

Is this cowboy too hot for her to handle? From the pristine wilderness of the Rocky Mountains to the thundering applause of the Stampede Grounds, Trisha fights her growing attraction to Cameron – a man who sweeps her off her feet one minute then ignores her. Not trusting her heart, Trisha can barely wait for the Stampede to finish so she can go home, never expecting that Cameron will cross an ocean to track her down. Will she believe this determined cowboy’s explanation? Or will she close the door on what could be the love of her life?

---

This well written contemporary Western romance is a fun read. Loving That Cowboy is the story of Trisha Watts, an English photographer attending the Calgary Stampede to judge a sexy cowboy photo contest, and champion steer wrestler Cameron Carter, who wants one final big win before he retires from the rodeo circuit. A little suspense and a lot of spice will keep you turning the pages.

I've read several of Ms. Chatham's books, and On Borrowed Time is another winner. Likeable characters, believable villains, and an excellent plot that keeps you turning the pages. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.

And then Randolph comes home. She married for love. But the man who returns to her is not the man she married. How will she survive this devastating event? And will her love be strong enough to hold everything she holds dear together?

---

Back from the great war, injured and lost, the hero has no idea where he is or who he is. This story is a sequel, but it can be picked up and read without much need for the backstory--although it will make you want to check out the others! The Great House setting will recall the popular TV series, as the newlywed lady of the manor finds her home commandeered for a hospital. Shell Shocked is a touching love story as well as a correct period piece and a quick and enjoyable read.

Couldn't put it down. Wonderful historical novel with all the expected twists and villians.

Born in London, Anita Davison connected with the history of that city at a young age. When the rest of the school trip were throwing the contents of their lunch boxes at each other, Anita imagined men in high white wigs, flared long coats and heeled shoes coming out of coffee houses, climbing into sedan chairs on the cobbles in Paternoster Row, where Christopher Wren was lowered down the outside of St Paul's Cathedral in a basket.
